Following abdominal surgery or liposuction, you will probably be instructed to stick with light activities for a few days. Depending on the procedure, you may have a short recovery of just one or two weeks, at which point you can resume normal activities. Light activity and stretching while you recover is important to avoid blood clots and speed healing. If you had more invasive abdominal surgery, remember that exercise is important to help you recover and avoid a hernia. Your abdominal muscles will be weakened due to the incision through the fascia and muscle, but you can perform some basic stretches and exercises soon after surgery.
It’s a good idea to perform ankle pump stretches as soon as you can, preferably while you’re still in bed recovering to improve circulation to your feet. To perform ankle pumps, move your ankles up and down while lying on your back. Start by flexing one foot as if you’re pressing your foot down on the gas pedal, then pull your toes up toward your shins as if releasing the gas. Repeat on the other foot and alternate for a few minutes. Try to perform ankle pumps every couple of hours.
This simple core exercise stretches the muscles in your lower back and glutes. If you squeeze your abs during the lift, you will also give your abs a good stretch. Make sure you ask your doctor how soon you can safely stretch your abs. Start by lying on your back on the floor or bed. Relax both arms at your sides with your palms facing down. Now bring your feet to within 10 inches of your buttocks with your knees bent at about a 90-degree angle. Your feet should be parallel and pointed straight. Slowly squeeze your glutes and raise your buttocks, raising as high as your feet feel comfortable. Hold for 10 seconds then relax.
The head lift stretch can be done in several ways to stretch the obliques and abdominals. Depending on your procedure, you can perform this stretch about two weeks post-surgery, or sooner if you had minimally-invasive liposuction.
One way to perform the head stretch is lying on your back on a bed then bending your knees with your feet about 8 inches from your butt. Place your hands under your head with your elbows bent then press your lower back into the bed while holding your abdominal muscles tight. Slowly bring your chin to your chest without bringing up your lower back. Breathe and hold the position for 10 seconds before relaxing. Another way to do the stretch is almost the same except you raise your head at the end of the stretch, following through with your shoulders.
Stretching after surgery or a cosmetic procedure can speed your recovery but it’s important to discuss any stretches or exercises with your doctor first. Follow your doctor’s care instructions and never stretch to the point of pain, especially while your body is still healing. Click here to learn more about recovery from liposuction.
